Cover story…

I’ve been puzzling about a cover for ‘Loving Judah’… I did think about a photo of a standing stone as they feature in the novel, but I had a rather poor attempt as using one, bit of a failure really, and then I went off the idea. Whatever the image I choose, I’ll play about with it, alter its colour and maybe its dimensions or definition… so the photos below are just ideas…

Now I think a door would be good, an image of a door; doors crop up  literally and metaphorically in ‘Judah’… so maybe a door…

Open doors… doorway… door way
Through darkness to light?
Be brave enough to step through and out of the shadow
A house at the end… well, that fits the story! But not the right image…

I like the images above… but I don’t think they are really what I have in mind.

A more sinister door… but not quite straight
Too pretty
Another pretty door…
Or maybe not a doorway but a bridge,a way across?
… or a winding path?
Or maybe not a door at all… a rather creepy statue?

Only a self imposed one! I want to publish ‘Judah’ on October 28th… with ‘Farholm’ which I previously published I wanted an image as if looking through water up to the sun – and I found what I wanted in a picture I took in an ice cave; with ‘Rosa’ I had a picture my daughter had taken of her own eye on her phone which was in my mind already, so creating the cover wasn’t too difficult!
      It’s fun!

Paths , doors and windows and winding steps. All are imagery for entering or leaving, to where we are going, are we looking in or looking out. And the time period and region are also considerations in choosing. Was this helpful ?

Very, my characters are leaving certain things, including aspects of themselves, and entering new areas of life… and the idea of looking out and looking in… yes, very helpful, thank you Carl!

Cristian Mihai had an interesting post of covers some time ago in which he suggested a few which were ‘the best’. I found myself in a minority in suggesting that few of them were much good as they wouldn’t have tempted me to pick up the book, so don’t take any advice from me! 🙂
