Launching Chorlton’s history!

I am so proud of my friend Andrew Simpson who I have known since I was eighteen. I’m proud of him for lots of reasons but today he is launching his first book tonight at the Horse and Jockey, in Chorlton-cum-Hardy, Manchester! Yes, tonight, November 7th and if you’re in the area come along and you can get a signed copy of ‘The History of Chorlton’! Get there early because they might all sell out! I can guaranteeing this will be a best seller!

The Horse and Jockey on a lovely sunny day

Given the location of the launch, it is no surprise that his book is a fascinating look at the history of Chorlton, a bustling and interesting suburb of Manchester. Once it was merely a collection of farms and homesteads to the south of the town of Manchester; how the area transformed through the years of social, political and industrial change in the nineteenth century is told by Andrew through the stories of the families who lived there. You will be taken back to walk their streets and lanes and byways, to see the flowers and wild plants they saw, hear the sounds of the streams and brooks, and learn their tales of improvements in their housing , sanitation, education, church and transport.

Andrews stories and Peter Topping’s pictures in a recent exhibition

I know I am biased because I am close to Andrew, and I also love Chorlton, but I think anyone would enjoy this book, full of pictures, photos, maps and drawings as it shoes you a slice of nineteenth century life which must have been replicated all over the country, and probably in many other countries too!

If your friendly neighbourhood bookshop doesn’t have it:
