‘The Hunger Games’ is a novel written for young people by Suzanne Collins and we’re reading it for our book club.
There are five of us who meet once a month to discuss a chosen book; we make our choice collectively, trying for something different, a historical novel, a true story, a biography, a Booker Prize winner… And tonight we’re going to discuss ‘The Hunger Games’. I’d glanced at some reviews of it and the film made from it, but was not really that interested until I idly picked it up in Waterstone’s and read the first couple of pages. I was impressed by the style, and the idea behind the story, but I did not intend to buy it, until it became our reading club choice.

I haven’t quite finished it yet, but no doubt will do so before I meet my friends; we take it in turns to meet at each other’s houses. I know one of the group didn’t like it at all, I think she found the idea of children killing children upsetting… and so it is. But… but if I were thirteen and reading it I would be gripped, utterly gripped, and I would want to be Katmiss the heroine. As an adult I am still gripped, but I wish I had written the novel, it’s great, I wish I had told the story of Katmiss!

🙂 I like the honesty here! Yes, sounds like a very good story, I’ve heard people talk about it (was too busy so far to read it). Looking forward to your review!

I had initially planned not to read The Hunger Games, but because of the big hype I decided to read it, and then I read all three books! The idea of children killing each other as a ‘game’ was quite shocking, but the books are really gripping!

I had the same sentiment… and also I am always put off something which is really popular, a silly prejudice I know. But I’m glad I overcame it!
