Well,well, Wells

A lovely, very old pub, and the setting for many scenes in the wonderful movie ‘Hot Fuzz’. If you haven’t seen it, I really recommend it; if you have seen it, you should visit Wells to see where a lot of the action takes place.

I took a photo of Legohotep, a previously undiscovered Pharaoh of the twenty-third dynasty… for the one and only Toby Spiller

I couldn’t resist taking a photo of these abandoned boots… where was the owner? They were nearly new and in good condition… that’s Wells for you!

Swans like this were positioned around the town and then auctioned to raise a lot of money for charity… I heard they got more than £100,000 for them. Each one was different… there are swans on the moat to the bishop’s palace, and they used to ring a bell when it was feeding time!

Wells is a cathedral city in Somerset, a very beautiful, interesting and ancient place. As you might guess, it is named after the wells which are in the area… obvious really! Most people visit it to see the wonderful Cathedral, which is a really glorious example of twelfth century architecture – it also has a lovely tea-room and a clock with little men who strike the hour. Like many places in Somerset, Wells was a Roman settlement and a Saxon one too but for many people it will be recognizable as the setting for the hilarious film ‘Hot Fuzz’ starring Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. My family can quote whole chunks of it ‘I’m not made of eyes’, ‘nobody tells me nothing’,  ‘ stop, or the ginger-nut gets it!’, ‘ Aunty Jackie’s sister’s brother’s boy,’ and of course ‘Yarp!’

And finally, the incomparable exchange:

DS Andy Wainwright: You do know there are more guns in the country than there are in the city.
DS Andy Cartwright: Everyone and their mums is packin’ round here!
Nicholas Angel: Like who?
DS Andy Wainwright: Farmers.
Nicholas Angel: Who else?
DS Andy Cartwright: Farmers’ mums.
