Surprise!

At the beginning of November I wrote about how I had prepared some hyacinths and was hoping they might flower at Christmas.

It was something we did at home, and I remember my mum, Monica buying two bulbs one for me and one for my sister, Andy. Usually one was blue and the other red, I think Andy was blue. I came across the glasses we had used as children and bought a couple of bulbs to try again. The bulbs looked in great condition…

… and I put them into the old glasses, to be stowed away in the dark:

One will have a white flower, the other will be blue

You see, at the time, I thought I was getting a white and blue hyacinth; we took them out of the cupboard today and look – what a surprise!

Delightful. I just wrote about the practice in my blog and here’s a nice example. Unusual colour too; seems what it missing in height it makes up for in intensity. I even like the sweeping roots. I always think of them as the tentacles of a jellyfish.
