Do you like Kipling?

The answer to “Do you like Kipling?” is obviously “I don’t know, I’ve never kipled!”

There is one poem by Rudyard Kipling which I learned as a child and which encapsulated so much of my imaginary world then, when I read Tarzan and many other jungle  adventures, including those by René Guillot, and the story of Colonel Fawcett, a mad man who got lost in the Amazon… I guess the fact that my grandfather Reg had spent time in Manaus before the first World war, also influenced my interest.

Mowgli’s Brothers.

Now Chil the Kite brings home the night
That Mang the Bat sets free–
The herds are shut in byre and hut,
For loosed till dawn are we.
This is the hour of pride and power,
Talon and tush and claw.
Oh, hear the call!–Good hunting all
That keep the Jungle Law!

I just adored Kipling as a young girl. I used to read my favorite books for hours and hours and still have many of them and break them out every so often. In my mind, you are never too old for the classic children’s literature!
