Put wood i’thole!

There’s something intriguing about doors, well, to me there is… I often take photos of them, and always wonder what is on the other side. I’m sure right from earliest times, people would have made some barrier to go across their shelter, whether it was in a cave, or in a structure of branches and twigs, they would have had something to close the hole and prevent draughts, rain and creatures coming in. Apparently, the ancient Egyptians were the first to actually construct doors… but maybe they are the first doors to have been discovered.

I just thought a door was a door, even if it is made of different materials, wood, metal, glass, and whatever is available or suitable for the purpose. If you think about it there are loads of different doors, hinged, sliding, rotating,  up-and-over as on a garage. Being born in January I am particularly aware that Janus is the god of doors, the god of transition, looking forward and back, to the past and the future… and on a domestic level, what is outside the door and what is within.

We didn’t have central heating when I was a child, and I can hear even now, my Dad shouting after me or my sister ‘Door!’ when we left it gaping open. If we’d grown up in the north of England no doubt he would have shouted  ‘Put wood i’thole!’

Another pretty door...

Lovely very old door... but not right for what I want!

A more sinister door... but not quite straight

My step mother once sent me a postcard from Ireland with beautiful amazing and charming doors. I have it on my wall in my home office. I hope to see these Irish doors one day. Yet another reason to visit this beautiful country, even though England has beautiful doors too.
