I was christened in the Round Church in Cambridge, actually the Church of the Holy Sepulshre. Sadly it is no longer in use as a church, my parents were married there and both of us children were christened there. I’m not a Christian but a christening is a lovely way to welcome a child into a family and community and celebrate the family. When my children were born we had a naming ceremony which we devised ourselves, invited all our friends and family and made a lovely celebration buffet to share.
This isn’t the font where we were Christened, but I expect it is similar.
The church was built in the 1130’s and is unusual in its circular design; it was built by the Fraternity of the Holy Sepulchre, I wonder if they were some organization similar to the Knights Templar? Maybe they were just a monastic order, or maybe they were a group of patrons who wanted to ensure safe passage into a heavenly afterlife. It is still a graceful and attractive small church, and should you ever visit Cambridge I’m sure you would enjoy a visit.
