For many Christians Friday is a day when meat should not be eaten, and so fish was often on the menu. This is not observed so widely now, as the rule was relaxed some time ago; however a lot of people still, in a traditional way, eat fish rather than land meat on a Friday. When I was at school, even though we were not a Christian school, Friday would be the day we had fish fingers (yippee!!) or boiled fish (yuk) or fish pie (so-so) I love fish, but the ret of my family is not so keen, so we don;’t often eat it at all for our main meal, although I might have some sardines for lunch.
Our local pub, the excellent Dolphin, serves very nice lunches, always with a different menu, and a wonderful Sunday roast dinner. However, on Friday evening, the pub becomes a chip shop where you can get everything you would from a regular chippy. So every so often, we treat ourselves and get good old fish and chips… and mushy peas of course.
Hello, what’s in here? Can I see a little battered tail?
Fish, chips and mushy peas, freshly cooked and piping hot!
