I caught fire – now onto Mockinjay!

I have written before about how surprised I was by ‘The Hunger Games Trilogy’, having had no interest in Children’s literature for many years I was totally caught up in the first novel of the trilogy, and having now finished the second, ‘Catching Fire’ I can’t wait to start the third, ‘Mockinjay’.

The premise of the novels sounds very disturbing, young people chosen from their districts in a futuristic world, chosen to fight to the death against each other and their combats played out across the TV screens across the nation. However, I urge you not to be put off but just try reading the first one, and I think if you like a cracking good read, then you will find it here.

I mentioned somewhere else the almost trepidation of starting to read a sequel or follow on story, that it won’t be as good as the first, but ‘Catching Fire’ is with plenty of twists and turns and surprises along the way. I won’t tell you anything about it except to say that once again the heroine Katniss is sent to a terrifying arena of battle to engage in a fight for survival against others. To be honest, I don’t think it is quite as good s the first – I was gripped all the way through, I couldn’t wait to turn the next page to find out what was happening and I stayed up late to finish it… but…. but… I felt the ending was a little complicated and contrived and maybe hurried, as if the writer, Suzanne Collins, had the third part, Mockinjay, waiting in the wings of her imagination and couldn’t wait to get started. Well, I can’t wait to get started on it either!
