I’m about to start reading Mockingjay, the third novel in the Hunger Games trilogy by Suzanne Collins. Not usually a reader of fiction for young people, I read the first as a book club choice…. I read the second because I was so captivated by the first, and now I am going to tackle the third… because I want to know what happens, and because everyone says it is the best of the three!
The books are set in the future, and sound horrific as they imagine a time when the people are kept subdued by the appalling spectacle of young people battling each other to the death in a specially made arena which can include jungles, seas, lakes, desserts… and worst of all, their life and death struggles are filmed and broadcast as prime-time compulsive viewing across the nation. However, nightmarish as it sounds, it is not ‘Lord of the Flies’; it is the struggle of a subjugated people, led by the young to fight oppression and find freedom. it is powerful, it is thought-provoking, it is exciting, it’s a great read!
I’ll let you know how I get on!
