Folk night at the Dolphin

On the first Monday of the month, local musicians gather at the best pub in the world, the Dolphin in Uphill, not just for the great beer, not just for the new menu, but for folk night. It started many years ago when my husband Bari and friends formed an Irish band called Celtic Shambles, Celtic because of the type of music they played and Shambles… well, you can guess that one! They would rehearse at the Dolphin and every month they would be the pub band for folk night. Celtic shambles has moved in different directions, but folk night continues, and tonight, July 1st, is the night!

There is usually a core of guitars, bhodráns, accordions, fiddles and concertinas, but there are other instruments too, including Bari’s cajón, Tom’s spoons, pipes, whistles, a cello, banjos, mandolins… you name it, it’s probably there. People sing, sometimes solo, sometimes starting a well-known song that everyone joins in with, sometimes a song where we just join in the chorus… it is great fun and enjoyed by all.

It’s a lovely sunny evening so we will be outside beneath the stars… so glad I live in Uphill!
