I’m so near the end rewriting my next novel, Flipside… For some reason the complete story failed to save but luckily I had a hard copy so now I am copying out those last chapters. I wrote the story many years ago and have not reread it for a while which makes a nice objective distance between my words and me.
I am now on the last two chapters which are full of action and with all the answers revealed, all the last loose ends knitted up into the whole fabric of the story. There is one outstanding bit of the puzzle, which is revealed in a conversation between the two main characters, David and Jaz in the hospital where they are recovering from the injuries they have suffered. David has suffered nightmares and terrors since an incident which happened to him while he was serving in the Balkans as a soldier. In the last few sentences David reveals what actually happened to his best friend, Magnus, and how exactly Magnus died.
And do you know, even though I had written it myself, as I read those last few lines, I had a little lump in my throat and a tiny prickle in my eye.
My hope is now that my future readers will be similarly moved and won’t just think the whole thing was obvious.
