As well as the estimable otter Ale, the Dolphin, our local pub, also serves a well-kept brew from Sharp’s brewery, Doom Bar. It sounds a wonderful name, doesn’t it, redolent of many old tales, myths and legends. It gives a little shiver every time I ask for ‘A pint of Doom, please’ expecting something almost Tolkienesque! Sharp’s brewery is in Cornwall and Doom Bar is an actual place although you would be unfortunate if you visted it because it is a sandbank in the estuary of the River Camel on the north coast.
For many centuries Doom Bar has cost the lives of many sailors and seen the wrecks of many ships; since they began to keep note of such things in the beginning of the nineteenth century, there have been 600 ships which have foundered on the treacherous sands.
Maybe many more folk have foundered on too many pints of Doom, but it is a fine beer and has only four natural ingredients, Cornish water, malted barley, whole hop flowers and yeast… I’m sure you’ll enjoy it!
