When I was in Iceland last year there were some wonderful expeditions organized; mostly we did everything together as we were only a small group, but on one occasion we had a choice of going to the fabulous Blue Lagoon, a hot spring bathing pool, or going to the small town of Akranes up the coast where there was some sort of inscription in Icelandic and in Gaelic. I really didn’t fancy toe Blue Lagoon so off I went up to Akranes.
How glad I was I did, I found it absolutely fascinating… and if I should be fortunate enough to go to Iceland again I would love to go back. There was a sort of open air museum with the strange equipment of the whaling industry, the use of which we could only guess at. As for the Irish inscription, it was a modern standing stone commemorating and celebrating the links between Ireland and Iceland. I got no pictures of it as it was beginning to snow, and by the time we got to it there was quite a blizzard blowing!
