We went recently to the Titanic Experience in Belfast and although I did not go round the new exhibition I was so impressed by the wonderful building; I was interested to see how the focus was not just on the awful accident which took so many lives but also on the men who built the ship and the Belfast families who were involved in its construction. If you get the chance to visit it, I really recommend that you should do so… and then maybe wander into the city as well, because you will find much of interest there.
Outside the City hall there are some memorials to those who lost their lives in the sinking of the Titanic. Designed by Sir Thomas Brock the monument has a wonderful Carrera marble sculpture, and was unveiled in 1920
The memorial is made from grey Cornish granite.
All those names, all those people… lost at sea; this plinth has fifteen bronze plaques which list, in alphabetical order, the names of 1,512 people who perished on RMS Titanic. from the Belfast City Council site:
“Many existing lists documented the First Class, Second Class and Steerage, but did not necessarily include all the crew members, the Guarantee Group, the postal workers and the musicians.
This is the first time that the names of everyone who perished have been recorded on one monument. ‘The Belfast List’ as it is now known, is a key feature of the memorial garden.”
