I saw a report on the BBC which gave Tony Gilroy’s (The Devil’s Advocate, Armageddon and the Bourne films) top ten tips for writing a movie…
- Go to the movies
- Make stuff up but keep it real
- Start small
- Learn to live by your wits
- Write for TV
- Learn to write anywhere, anytime
- Get a job
- Get a life
- Don’t live in Los Angeles
- Develop a thick skin and just keep going
… and I thought his list could be adapted for any other writing:
- Read stuff
- Make stuff up but keep it real
- Start small
- Learn to live by your wits
- Write for publication – local newspapers, village magazines etc, anything to put your words in front of a reader… or you could write a blog!
- Learn to write anywhere, anytime
- Get a job
- Get a life
- Live in your head as well as the real world
- Develop a thick skin and just keep going
