A little romance

There is nothing at all wrong with romance, in fact I love romance… and although I quite like a little romance in what I read, I’m not sure I would want to read ‘a romance’… and similarly when I write, I’m not sure I want to write a romance although there is plenty of it in my stories.

So… a romance….

  • a love affair.
  • an ardent emotional attachment or involvement between two people
  • a strong, sometimes short-lived attachment
  • a mysterious or fascinating quality or appeal, as of something adventurous, heroic, or strangely beautiful
  • a medieval narrative in prose or verse that tells of the adventures and heroic exploits of chivalric heroes,  usually set in a distant time or place
  • a type of literature telling such stories and adventures
  • a novel, story, or film, that deals with love, especially in an idealized form
  • a lyrical, tender, or sentimental song or  piece of music…
I’m editing a very old story of mine and unfortunately it has struck me that from the first page it is perfectly apparent who the hero is destined to be, and no matter that he is at first married (she conveniently gets murdered) and no matter that the main character fancies the pants of another man (he turns out to be the murderer and is having an affair with her brother…) I say unfortunately, because I hadn’t intended it to be a romance in that sense, and also I like to keep my readers in suspense fro a while longer, and surprise them with a few twists and turns before the resolution.
