Mudlarks

Sounds fun… but the poverty which encouraged these children to ‘mudlark’ certainly was not fun for the families of Portsea.

I have very strong memories of the Portsmouth mudlarks. Many times as a nipper I caught the Gosport ferry from Portsmouth with my grandmother to go visit my Aunty May, and she always found a few coins to lob down at them. Most people would deliberately throw their coins into the mud, but she always tried to make sure her mudlarks could catch the coins, because she felt so sorry for them having to scrabble in the mud to find them if they didn’t. There must be thousands of coins still down there under that filthy greasy mud in the Harbour.
