Didsbury Through Time…

I mentioned a couple of days ago that I had some exciting news… well now I can share it!! My best friend Andrew Simpson, who wrote and published the wonderful book about a small village south of Manchester which became a major and well-loved suburb of the great city, ‘The Story of Chorlton-cum-Hardy’, has now published a second book.

Andrew has collaborated with Peter Topping, an exciting artist, to produce ‘Didsbury Through Time’; the idea of doing a book with ‘then and now’ photographs is not new, but always popular and fascinating. It is so interesting to see a place you know well in a modern shot, and then to see an old photo of the same place, especially when taken from the same spot. Andrew and peter, however have produced something very different and much more charming.

You may remember me writing about the two of them producing a wonderful display of pictures and text along the boards surrounding a building site:

Peter's pictures and Andrews text perfectly compliment each other.
Peter’s pictures and Andrews text perfectly compliment each other.

Using the same technique of Peter’s wonderful paintings, and Andrew’s interesting commentary, they have taken old photographs and postcards of the Manchester suburb of Didsbury and produced a then and now book with a difference. If you have any interest in turn of the century Manchester… or indeed turn of the century England, and a particularly if you have an interest in Didsbury then this will be a book you will really enjoy. If you ever lived in Didsbury as a student, or studied at the college there, or any f your friends and relations did, then this will be a lovely gift. It is beautifully produced… it’s an absolute delight!
