Turkish Delight

I adore Turkish delight… I don’t usually have a sweet tooth, but Turkish delight is an exception! I also adore Turkish Delight, a wonderful restaurant I first visited in Chorlton-cum- Hardy, Manchester well over twenty years ago. It was fabulous that first time… but to be honest, I can’t really remember what I ate, only that it was wonderful. It was my son’s twenty-first birthday; he is fascinated by the country of Turkey, its history, its cuisine, and he’s trying to learn the language. It seemed rather fitting, then, as a treat to take him to a Turkish restaurant… and as we remembered that superb meal from all those years ago we decided to go again.

What a great evening we had! Everything was just perfect, from the friendly welcome we received as we went in, the elegant décor, the intimate atmosphere and the menu… oh dear… what a difficult time we had trying to choose what to eat! Everything looked wonderful, the air was full of delicious smells and discrete glances at other diners plates told us that we were in for a treat. We had some helpful suggestions of what we might choose to eat, my son decided on  Iskender Kebab, a mixed selection of lamb and chicken, grilled over charcoal, I eventually chose Sultanin Beytisi which was tender slices of grilled lamb, and my husband had chicken with mushrooms ant tomatoes. We had rice and a salad of red cabbage, red onion, chopped tomatoes and cucumber and herbs, light and refreshing. We had a bottle of Turkish wine which beautifully complimented the meal, and then we had Turkish coffee to finish… oh… and we just managed a slice of the Turkish Delight special recipe date, walnut and honey cake (grandma’s recipe) and kadiefi

A wonderful, wonderful meal, faultless in every way… and a memorable way to celebrate a special birthday. If you are ever in Manchester… give yourself a lovely treat, go and visit Turkish Delight… we can’t wait to go back and visit again!
