Driving home the other day I heard ‘Lola’ by the Kinks, and I thought what a great story it was, character, romance, tension, surprise, a conclusion… everything in just a few minutes! I was thinking about the Kinks other songs, ‘Waterloo Sunset’, ‘Death of a Clown’, and I thought how much I like songs which have a narrative in their lyrics. It can be quite subtle, as shown in one of my favourite songs from the Mavericks latest albums, In Time, ‘In Another’s Arms’, written by Raul Malo.
I’ve written about this song before, and how the choice of a single word, ‘another’ rather than ‘each other’ tells a whole different story.
