Loinnir – an Irish poem about winter

My Irish friend gave me a calendar for Christmas – I love calendars and never peep at the pictures for the months to come, I like a little surprise on the 1st! The calendar my friend gave me is of some lovely paintings accompanied by a poem in Gaelic. I’ve been learning Gaelic for some time but I really am struggling to make progress… however I do enjoy it and find it fascinating.

I’m not up to translating the poem which is all about winter, however, here it is:

Loinnir

Loinnir seaca
A fhuarann croí
Deargaíonn srón
I ngarbh- ghreim
Géar-ghaoth
An Gheimhridh

Cuirtini sneachtach
Ar fhuinneog spéireach
Ag folú tIre
Faoi chalóga léimneach
Ar bháine sléibhe
Sa reo-dhrúcht

Saighead solais
Tré scoilt néáll
Mar splanc spleodrach
Ar chasacht scéil
I bhfridin lonrach
Tré dheatacht céile
Ag gealadh iontais
