Desert Island dish

An eminent Scottish lawyer Dame Elish Angiolini who is the first woman to become Scotland’s Solicitor General and  also Lord Advocate was on Desert Island Discs today, the BBC programme where a celebrity is asked to choose what eight pieces of music they would take to a desert island if they were marooned on one. There was a joking reference to a desert island dish, Dame Eilish would take pasta with ceps, green salad and chips… but that might have been a little joke!

I got to wondering what my desert island dishes would be… tricky… would it be ingredients or the finished meal?

Ingredients:

  1. white peaches
  2. asparagus
  3. proper Cheddar cheese, all grainy and smelling of a farmyard
  4. herring
  5. crystallised ginger covered with dark chocolate (or the yoghurty coating from Holland and Barrat’s)
  6. pheasant
  7. oysters
  8. sweetbreads

…but if it was actual cooked dishes… I’m not sure i could choose… but here is an off-the-top-of-the head list

  1. English breakfast
  2. Sunday roast dinner with my dad’s gravy, or maybe Christmas lunch
  3. Thai curry made by my husband
  4. herrings fried in oatmeal with brown bread and proper butter (not margarine or buttery spread)
  5. Chinese meal as made in Mr Yim’s kitchen at the Wun Wah… and if it had to be just one dish, Cantonese prawns
  6. a Keralan curry – any! (extra hot too, please!)
  7. pasta and cheese
  8. parmigiana di melanzane

I know I will post this and then think… oh but I should have included…
