Unexpectedly revealed

It’s very strange when I’m writing that so often it’s only when I read through my work that I see links and connections which I didn’t consciously make at the time of writing. If you read my latest novel, Radwinter, when you get to the last part and a secret is revealed, you’ll see that it has been hinted at all the way through – in fact the main character thinks back over the narrative and points out those things, ostensibly to himself, but obviously to the reader. None of the things he mentions were written with the final revelation in mind, because up until very near the ending, I had a totally different idea of what the conclusion was going to be.

So how does this happen? Is it subconscious planning on my part? is it just luck? Sometimes it almost seems as if the story really exists and I’m just writing it down – not exactly automatic writing, but along those lines. Maybe it is a mixture of those things.

I was out walking today, a beautiful, beautiful sunny day. we went up on the hill and I looked down to the marina and saw this tree and I was very taken with the colour of it, especially contrasted against the water which was reflecting the lovely blue sky. It was only when I looked at the photo later that I saw the wonderful pattern of the wind across the water; obviously it had been there when I took the picture, but it was unexpectedly revealed to me later! Rather like the conclusion of my story!
