Hans Fowler Price

Photo0831[1]Hans price was an architect who changed the face of Weston-super-Mare, designing many of the major buildings in the town. I couldn’t find Hans Fowler Price in any census returns before 1861, although I did find his father George, and sister Selina and brother Henry Meredith. Hans appears again in the 1871 census, no longer living at home with his parents and brothers and sisters, but now with his own wife Jane, and six, yes six children under the age of seven!

Louisa, Minnie, Harriet, Hans Ogilvy, Emily and George, and by 1881 he had two more daughters, Winifred and Marian. The last census that we see Hans, he is living in Weston-super-mare, widowed, but with two daughters and his brother Francis living with him. He had married his wife, Jane Plaister Baker in 1862, sadly she died in 1889. He died in 1912 at the age of seventy-seven.

He is now commemorated in Weston in many ways, probably the most noticeable now is the Hans Price Academy, a school for young people aged 11-16.
