Roche Court

We were lucky enough to go on a visit to the Roche Centre in Wiltshire which is an exhibition centre, art gallery and beautiful parkland and woods displaying modern contemporary sculpture of amazing variety.

It was originally based in London, but moved to Wiltshire in 1994 to an attractive nineteenth century house with wonderful space around it to beautifully display the works. It is a sculpture park, gallery and education centre and also exhibits work from  Barbara Hepworth, Kenneth Armitage and Ian Stephenson. There is work by sculptors and artists such as Anthony Caro, Edmund de Waal, Barry Flanagan, Laura Ford and Antony Gormley. Some of the pieces which are displayed are moved around from place to place, so at different times of the day or in different seasons, they look different. When placed among winter trees they may seem caged, in summer the leafy bowers would seem protective and embracing. Some pieces were especially commissioned, for example there is a piece by Richard Long called Tame Buzzard Line, which was inspired by the sight of a buzzard swooping across the lawn to an old elm tree. http://sculpture.uk.com/artists/richard_long

We weren’t allowed to take photos to use on social network sites or blogs, so I contented myself with gazing at the fabulous art work, and taking pictures of mosses and lichens!
