Walford Peak

My great-grandfather was born Louis Moses, but he and his brothers changed their surname to Walford, while they were living in Tasmania where he was born. I would love to know why, but I guess it is something I will never know.

I knew there was a mountain in Tasmania named Walford Peak, and I have now found where it is… should I ever want to go to view it! I don’t know if there is a connection with my family, or the other family of Walfords who lived in Tasmania at the time. They were descended from Barnard Walford, a convict  who was transported there for stealing. He originally came from Austria, to London to Australia.

Walford Peak lies in the Lake Beatrice Conservation Area in west Tasmania and is 3195 feet (974 meters)  high. It is near Queenstown and Rosebery. Apparently there is a road which goes nearly halfway up, to 1545 feet (471 meters)  from the summit. That would be the nearest I would get… having been born in the flat lands of Cambridgeshire, I have no ‘up’ in my legs! At least I could take a photo of the top!
