The Man in the Iron Mask, by Alexandre Dumas which continues the adventures of the musketeers he had previously written about in his romantic and exciting novels. However there really was a man who was imprisoned for thirty-four years whose identity was concealed… not by an iron mask but by a black velvet one. There have been countless theories about who he might have been, a royal relative, a servant, a general… many theories but the truth is no-one knows.
I caught sight of a Penguin Classic version of the novel… but the way it was positioned gave the book a most unusual cover:
