I always thought ‘Lilac Wine’ was written by Elkie Brooks… I was wrong, it was written in 1950 by James Shelton and loads of other people have recorded it, including Eartha Kitt, Nina Simone, and Katie Melua; it seems a female sort of song to e but maybe that’s because I associate it with Elkie Brooks, but two Jeffs, Buckley and Beck have also recorded it.
Elkie Brooks was born in Salford and her name was originally Bookbinder; her other well-known songs include “Pearl’s a Singer” and “Fool (If You Think It’s Over)”, but she has released many other albums. Apparently she lives not far away from me, in the next county of Devon… maybe I should go and visit!
