Sandy tales

The sandcastle sculptures of Weston-super-Mare are becoming famous and draw in a lot of tourists to our town to see the wonderful exhibition. The Exhibition has run for the last eight years and draws sculptors from all over the world to build their wonderful structures to whatever is the theme for the year. This year it is Once Upon A Time… with tales, myths, legends, fantasies and stories of all genres and countries, brought to life in nothing but sand and water.

Beatrice Potter is well-known and loved as a writer and beautiful illustrator of country stories for children; her characters are renowned throughout the world, and three are on display on Weston beach. Potter was born in Kensington in London in 1866 and used to holiday as a child in the lake District which she loved so much she moved there when she was grown up. She had bought a property hoping to marry her fiancé, of whom her wealthy parents disapproved; however he died and when she moved to the lake District she engaged a local solicitor to act on her behalf. They fell in love and married… much to her parents further disapproval. They were married for thirty years, and she died in 1943 at the age of 77, her beloved husband died eighteen months later.

I adore sand sculptures – many years ago these artists started to exhibit at a neighbouring resort from the one I grew up in at the Baltic coast. We went to see the exhibition and were amazed at the stunning displays. Eat your heart out kids, you won’t beat these sandcastle experts with your little buckets and spades!

Yes, I vaguely remember that it came via the Netherlands to us as well. I’d love to see the ice sculptures done in parts of the world – but I don’t fancy the cold temperatures that go with it, as one wanders around the exhibits.
