Savoury bread and butter pudding?

Bread and butter pudding is a classic English pudding; bread and butter, arranged in a dish with a scattering of dried fruit, and a milk and egg mix sweetened to taste poured over, allowed to rest then baked to be all soggy and yummy and gooey and crispy on the top.

But supposing instead of dried fruit you sprinkled crispy bacon bits, or some fried chorizo or some fried onion, or other vegetables, maybe oven-roasted… and mixed some grated cheese in with the milk and egg, and grated a little more on top with a sprinkle of paprika or black pepper? Would that work? The idea of a savoury egg mix is there in a bacon and egg flan, or a quiche, or an omelette, or a Spanish tortilla… so would it work with bread as the firm bit as opposed to pastry round the outside?

I think this is worth pursuing especially as we have some nice crusty bread which has unfortunately gone dry… I will try it, test it on my pet guinea pigs, i.e. my husband and son, and report back!
