MIndbenders – groovy!

There was a question in the pub quiz last night which mentioned the band, or group as they were then, called the Mindbenders. There was a lot of guffawing from the younger contingent who had never heard of them, and possibly some of the older folk who hadn’t heard of them either.

The Mindbenders were the backing band for the singer Wayne Fontana; they came from Manchester and originally, as well as Wayne, there were Bob Lang, Ric Rothwell, and Eric Stewart. Fontana started the band in 1963, when British music was becoming universally successful. One of their best known and best-loved songs was ‘Groovy Kinda Love’ written by Carole Bayer Sager and Toni Wine; it’s been recorded by many people as well as the Mindbenders, including Phil Collins. It is such a sweet song, who could resist it… brings back memories of being young and in love, of being a teenager, and of everything being groovy… actually everything is still pretty groovy for me!!

Someone associated with them but who went on to other things was Graham Gouldman who was in 10cc, another great Manchester band, totally original, wonderful songs.

Here is the 60’s version:
