The Old Tivoli

I came across this photo of the Old Tivoli in Weston-super-Mare; although we’ve lived here for some time, I’m not as familiar with the town and its history as maybe I should be. I think the Old Tivoli here is what was the Tivoli cinema which was bombed in 1942 during the war. I’m not sure that when this photo was taken it was a cinema… I’m struggling to find very much information about it! There is now a Tivoli Lane in Weston which I guess is where the cinema used to be.

Tivoli is a town in Italy, in the Lazio region, but I guess many people have come across the name as the Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen; however there are also Tivoli Gardens in Kingston Jamaica, a Tivoli Park in Ljubljana, Slovenia, and a housing estate in Hong Kong also called Tivoli Garden… I guess that would be a good quiz question – what does Weston-super-Mare have in common with Copenhagen, Ljubljana and Hong Kong?!
