At the Weston Food Festival, I couldn’t resist tasting then buying some delicious cheeses. There were lots of different cheese producers but the one which particularly caught my eye was the Somerset Cheese Company. Although their stand was really busy, the people were really friendly and pleasant to everyone, even those who were just going round sampling everything with no real intention to buy! The cheeses themselves looked really interesting, and there were little tasters to try.
I like unpasteurised cheese, I like cheese made from goat and sheep, and also some made from buffalo milk…. mmmm, intriguing, and mmmm, yummy! The only difficult thing was deciding which to buy! I tried the goats’ and sheep cheeses, the sheep in particular was very tasty, but in the end I bought an unpasteurised cheese, Rainbow Gold – and when I looked it up on their website it explained that: after maturation this cheese is wash rinded every day for several weeks using an ale called ‘Golden Chalice’ which is brewed locally by ‘Glastonbury Ales’. This process is what gives the cheese its colour and also the lovely texture and taste. There was also a Six Spires, and two flavoured ones, chilli and herb and cider. I also bought the Pendragon buffalo cheese, not the smoked one, which is described as buttery… yes indeed, it really is!
