This rather elegant building on the seafront of Burnham on Sea is the Reeds Arms, named after George Reeds who was an important individual in the history of the town. The hotel, as it was, was built in the 1850’s, and was actually originally called The Reeds Arms; it then became the Queen’s Hotel, before reverting to its original name.George Reed was also responsible for the National School Establishment built in 1855 on the Esplanade by George Reed. He also had two very beautiful terraces built at the end of the North Esplanade which are known as Julia Terrace and Catherine Terrace; how charming that he named them after his daughters. His residence was the Manor House, which is now used by the council; the Manor Gardens were his own private gardens. George was born in 1805 and died in 1869.
