Hortensias or hydrangeas are wonderful and varied shrubs; they come in every shade from white to pink to red, or blue from the pales dawn blue to the deepest sunset mauves and purples. The flours stay on the plants, and turn beautiful paler shades and still look attractive; if you bring them indoors they dry out and can look really nice as an arrangement. As with may popular shrubs, they originate in Asia, mostly in China and Korea and also Japan. Some of them are deciduous but some of them are evergreen; there are shrubs, which stay small, and shrubs which grow up to three meters tall! There are also some climbing ones, which are very vigorous, as we learned, when we put one to grow along our back wall and it just went mad!! It didn’t however produce many flowers, which was the reason we bought it! Some varieties have large round ‘mop’ heads as ours does, but there are also some very pretty lace-caps… maybe we should get one next spring…
