It was quiz night tonight, so my boy and I sauntered down to the Dolphin; Tuesday is band practice for my husband so he was drumming and joined us later. None of my son’s friends were available so we were a team of two… which really doesn’t matter in the Dolphin because everyone is so friendly. Just recently we’ve found seats by a group of people, a husband and wife and their friend, Keith, who I wrote about last week, sometimes joined by a South African lady and her river pilot husband. The husband and wife come from Bolton, so we call them ‘the Boltons’. Bolton is a lovely town in the north of England… I bought my wedding and engagement ring there so I have fond memories. It used to have a fabulous fish market, but ‘the Boltons’ tell me it is no good any more, which is quite sad.
The nice thing about quiz night at the Dolphin is the friendly rivalry; for example, if there is a question we know… for example, which band did Carol Dekker sing with, to which I knew the answer, T’Pau… and the Boltons don’t know, we will swap the answer for a question we didn’t know… which footballer was known as Sparky? Answer mark Hughes… We still want to beat them, and they us, but we still joke and laugh together and swap answers.
I don’t know anything about the Boltons, except from whence they came, but I do know they are really lovely people and if we met them in the pub on any other night we would still sit with them and have a really pleasant evening, with a lot of stories, a lot of fun and a lot of laughs… but that’s the way it is in the Dolphin!
