Shipping news… the quiz

We are so lucky in our village that we have two great pubs; our ‘local’ is the Dolphin, but we also  enjoy visiting the Ship. What do these pubs have in common? Atmosphere, great group of regulars, fab landlord/landlady, first class beer, and a good fun quiz.

So tonight it being Thursday, we drifted down to the Ship for quiz night. Funnily enough, the beer on offer was Otter, which was also served at the Dolphin. I had a pint of Otter – well, it would be rude not to, then a couple of pints of very fine Guinness.

The quiz is run by a wonderful quiz master, James… it makes such a difference to have a good person running the quiz, fun, funny, knowledgeable, so we knew we were in for a great evening. The first two rounds were a picture round of ten random famous people, and a 25 question general knowledge round. As usual with the picture round, you see pictures of people who are so familiar but can you remember their names? No you just cannot! The general knowledge round is clever because some of the questions have such obvious answers that you think they can’t be right! There is a break and then there is a question paper that you can peruse while you also listen to twenty songs, trying to remember who sang them and what the title is. The music round covers every era from the 40’s onwards! Again, you hear familiar songs but can you remember who sang them or what the title is? Can you heck! I knew it was David Bowie… but how could I not remember my all-time fave Bowie song, Ashes to Ashes?

We came third, so we didn’t win – the prize was half of the entry money, the other half going to charity, and we didn’t come second and get a bottle of wine. We didn’t come last and receive the booby prize of either a stick of rock or a sugar lolly from Porthcawl…

A great night! Thank you Ship, and thank you James the quiz master!
