Although we had custard at home all through my childhood – Bird’s instant custard powder, I don’t ever remember having a custard tart… in fact the first time I remember them was when I moved to Manchester and I thought it sounded rather strange, imagining Bird’s custard of my childhood! I soon discovered differently!
I was surprised, therefore to come across a recipe for custard tart in my mum’s handwriting. It is very much a shorthand recipe, so I’m thinking maybe she heard it on the radio, or someone told it to her.
I think I ought to try making it… the following recipe is exactly s my mum wrote it:
Custard tart
- Line deep pie dish with thick pastry
- Bake 10 mins
- ¾ pint milk in saucepan with sugar to taste
- Beat 2 eggs – add milk bring to blood heat
- Pour into pastry case
- Bake near bottom of oven, no 6, for 30 mins, sprinkle nutmeg?
