Like so many – I guess the majority, of tourists, we only had a very brief time in beautiful Iceland. I would really love to return, to travel further and more widely, to go at different times of the year, to stay for several weeks or even months!
We visited as you can tell in November, and flew into Keflavik Airport and stayed in Reykjavik. Our tours from there were necessarily limited to the south-west of the island, but we went on the main tourist trail known as the Golden Circle because it takes in some of the most famous of the country’s beautiful sites… Another time I would like to visit less well-known places which I am sure are equally interesting and beautiful
We visited two stunning waterfalls, Faxi which means ‘mane’ like a horse’s mane, and Gullfoss, the Golden Falls.
We continued our journey to Geyser which as you can guess from the name is the site of the original geyser which gave its name to geysers everywhere; sadly Geyser itself no longer spurts water high into the air, but Little Geyser still hubble-bubbles away, and Stokkur performs every 5-10 minutes. We were told that in the olden days people used to think it amusing to throw things into Geyser, like armchairs and tables and see them shoot high into the sky, or soap powder to have a massive bubble-gun effect… maybe that was what caused h demise of Geyser…
Lastly we visited the huge rift valley at Þingvellir; this is where the world’s oldest parliament first met, the Alþingi. I have been to Iceland before but we didn’t make it here last time so I was so excited to se it this time! It is spectacular beyond description, the Mid-Atlantic Ridge where Eurasian and North American Plates meet. You can stand with one foot in Europe and one in America!
The very edge of the American continent!

If you look real close at the edge of the American continent you can see me waving at you with an impish grin on my face. Tee Hee!!!
