Watching what I eat

Yes, it’s that time of year again… my trouble is I love food, I love everything about it, growing it, buying it, preparing it, reading about it, watching it on TV… and obviously eating it. I know that for me, exercise is the key as well as being careful how many calories I’m consuming… but my life-style sort of conspires against me… I say sort of because although I do spend a lot of time sitting here writing, I could make more effort even here at home to be more active. I could spend ten minutes on the Wii for every hour I wrote, I could run up and downstairs three times for every one time I need to go up or down… all sorts of little ways…

We are back on the 5:2 diet, which worked so brilliantly for my husband last year (2 stone – ie 28 pounds) and less so for me. I try to make our meals, tiny though they maybe look interesting and tempting and while we eat we turn off any distractions, close books and newspapers and whatever else tempts  focus away from what is on our plate. I am sure, literally watching, looking at, gazing upon your food helps be content with what you are given. So many times I see people with something they are eating and they are munching away automatically, swallowing without realising, because their eyes are fixed on their phone/TV screen/newspaper/book/magazine etc…

So my mantra, focus on food!

My wife bought me a talking bathroom scale for Christmas but everytime I get on it, the darn thing says ( One at a time please ). Another song I like goes. If you go where the huskies go.Don’t go eating the yellow snow.

I don’t like the sound of your scales… 😦 … and I shan’t comment on the husky song!
When I get on the Wii, it weighs me and makes a little disappointed ohhh sound.

On a more serious note. When I found out that I was borderline diabetic I was given a diet of 180 carbs a day. You look at the carbs of the food you are eating and subtract the amount of fiber to come up with the total carbs. I lost 47 lbs in three months but I worked out vigorously as well. So it can be done. P.S. I have a harem of seven women at the YMCA but the youngest one is sixty seven years old. But they are all great fun.

That is amazing, David! You did so well – I bet you feel so different, and I bet it makes a much more healthy you… and obviously having seven women must certainly keep you on your toes! 😉
Isn’t it nice though when you have a group of friends, regardless of their age who enjoy the same thing!

All the foods sold in Canada have nutrition fact sheets attached to them so you know how many carbohydrates and fibre you have per serving. Further more I cut back on processed food and cold cuts for sanwiches. I should be called Jack Spratt because I hate fat in any form now and just the smell of bacon frying makes me ill. Plus I spent two hours this morning cleaning snow from my driveway and taking the hanging snow off the roof. My wife came out to help me and we had great fun. Have to make the best of winter here as it lasts forever. Miss my skiing tho but still get around pretty good.P.S. Some of the nicest people I have met are at the YMCA.
