Like many people I have several copies of Mrs Beeton; I have my own copy, acquired when I was cooking for myself, I have my mum’s well-used copy which I inherited and I have this old copy from 1912. This is the ‘updated’ version, the original was published in the 1850’s. I’m fascinated by the adverts there are on the inside covers.
“There is no Sauce to equal Tomato Catsup, and no Tomato Catsup to equal Gordon and Dilworth’s” says the advert. It is made from whole fresh fruit! You could also enjoy Gordon and Dilworth’s Tomato Soup (I love all the capitals!) fit only for an epicure! Apparently the firm was American, but the advert here offers the address of British suppliers, W.B.Fordham in London and William Taylor and Son in Edinburgh.
If you suffer from gout, rheumatism or nervous afflictions, then radio-active ærated waters are what you require, Professor Klemperer tells you that Radium Emanation is just the thing for your rheumatism! I think I will probably give that one a miss!

What do you do drink it or bath in it? I’ve tried everything else so maybe it’s worth giving it a go. Seriously!

Ninety percent of people with MS or back trouble try alternative medicines or treatments.I’ve practically given up on traditional medicine as I have been lied to and prescribed life threatening drugs with no mention of the side effects or risks.Your left feeling bitter and frustrated and worthless. It’s only my sense of humor that keeps me sane and reading your blog of course.
