Saturday morning and we have a leisurely start to the day but armed with my mug of tea I come through to start writing… a little blogging to begin with and then on to the final part of my novel…
What? What??? The internet is down!!! Noooo!!! This happened last week, and it was fixed – a fault on the line apparently. So this morning we rang the engineers again and it was a fault on the line, again. It seems to have fixed itself but there is someone coming to look at it on Tuesday.
As I stared morosely at the message on the screen saying we couldn’t connect, it struck me how dependent we are on the internet… and this is me, just an ordinary person who uses it for pleasure, and work, and home business such as paying bills and ordering things. As a writer I am able to continue writing on the computer, or take up a pen and writing pad and do it the old way… but then I thought about how I can keep in touch with my daughter who is in the States, and other people far away… it also gave me a much more scary thought of how vulnerable we all are now because of our dependence on this technology… scary indeed!

Imagine being on a plane and the computer crashes. It’s been proven recently that the pilots have forgoten how to fly without them! When I showed my Mother my first home computer years ago her comment was ( those things are going to ruin this world). I think she was right.

It’s ridiculous in schools now with all the technology kids have… must make them lazy thinkers!

Years ago a fiber optic cable was cut by a farmer close to us and all the ATM machines went down and our debit cards wouldn’t work. It literally brought our city to a standstill as nobody uses cash that much anymore. It reminded me of years ago that when you got off work at 3pm all the banks were already closed and you couldn’t cash your paycheck. You had to go to a bar and they would cash it only if you bought some beer. I think that’s when I started drinking regularly. What goes around comes around I guess.

Yes, and the banks wouldn’t open on Saturdays… Now we get our cash from the Bank of Dolphin 😉
