Book club tonight – and one of the chums messaged me that she’d be driving past my house and would pick me up… how kind!
We arrived and glasses of wine were thrust into our hands and nibblies were pressed upon us. While we were waiting for the others to arrive we talked about what our host needs to wear for her forthcoming cruise to Norway. As neither of us had been on a cruise we could only hazard a guess, but as our dear host is a tall elegant lady I’m sure she will look wonderful in whatever she wears.
Two of the others arrive with news that the sixth member of our group is poorly and won’t be with us. So… book club… and we talk about the cruise, the cruises that others have been on, the expected grandchild, the naughty deaf dog, my cough, the poorly member, the cost of holiday insurance… and all our other news.
So… to the books; this month we have read two, ‘David and Goliath’ by Malcolm Gladwell, and ‘A Town Like Alice’ by Nevil Shute. I had to confess that i hadn’t read all of the Gladwell book – I really felt he was wagging his finger at me, and I disputed his interpretation of the Bible story of the shepherd lad and the Philistine giant… But we had a good discussion about it, and i now want to read his other book ‘Outliers’. We all had positive things to say about Shute, although he is very much of his time and the book which had been published in the early 50’s was quite dated in style… and the casual racism was definitely not appreciated, even though we could understand that it was of its time.
So books discussed we moved on to what we would read next… We all had ideas, but we couldn’t all remember titles, or authors, or even much about whatever it was we thought we might like to read next time… but in the end we settled on Wolf Winter by Cecilia Ekbäck, and Waterlog: A Swimmer’s Journey Through Britain by Roger Deakin.
After more chat and more wine, eventually we said goodbye until the next time. I love my book club!

Glasses of wine were thrust into your hand. It has a note of urgency to it like hurry up and drink cause your no fun when your sober.
