Jackdaw

Jackdaws  are small crows which you can easily recognize because of their grey hoodies and blue eyes. They are smaller than ravens, crows and rooks and can be found just about everywhere; they are amusing and intriguing to watch, full of character! Apparently there are over a million and a half pairs of jackdaws across Britain – except in the Scottish Highlands. They eat just about anything, small animals, such as insects, worms and mice, vegetation, such as seeds, berries and fruit and of course in our modern world, scavenging on landfill sites. They are socialble and nest in colonies.

I think the idea of the phoenix rising from the ashes came from the habit of crows going close to a smoldering fire so that the smoke would get rid of the tics and lice on them. Our native Indians worship them for there intelligence. They can count as high as four but that’s a story in itself.
