We first went on holiday to County Antrim in 1995 and in fact my daughter celebrated her first birthday there. We fell in love with this part of the British isles, and have visited there every year since.
We were enchanted by the dramatic Dunluce Castle, and I can’t tell you how many times we have visited, nearly forty if no more I would guess!
Parts of the castle date back to the 14th century, when it was built by Richard Óg de Burgh, 2nd Earl of Ulster; however, the first record of it is in 1513 when Dunlice Castle was owned by the MacQuillan clan. It later became the home of the MacDonnell family of Antrim and the Clan MacDonald of Dunnyveg in Scotland.
A dramatic event which happened, was during a storm in the seventeenth century when part of te castle, including the kitchen, collapsed into the sea during as storm. The lady of the manor packed up her servants and her train and left, vowing never to live in it again.
If ever you are visitign Ireland, and you are in the northern counties, visit Dunluce, you will fall in love with it as we have!
