We went into a rather lovely Spanish tapas restaurant in the early afternoon; we’d had a long journey and a busy morning and so we were looking for lunch, and we found Don Fernando’s Spanish tapas restaurant. There was a wonderful menu and eventually after much thought and a few swigs of white Rioja I chose kidneys in a sherry and onion sauce, and something I have never had before but often read about and wanted to try, Chipirones en su Tinta… which is baby squid in its own ink.
I like squid, I’ve eaten it in lots of different ways, but never with this recipe, and I’m not sure I would ever try and cook it myself – it’s so easy to end up with what feels like a load of rubber bands in your mouth! The dish I ate at Don Fernando’s was very simple and simply delicious. The squid was cooked in red wine, and no doubt cooked with onions, garlic and olive oil too. Some of the other recipes I’ve seen have lots of ingredients, including herbs, peppers, tomatoes, flavours I think might dominate the delicate fish.
Don Fernando’s is in Richmond, a place I would love to visit again… and if I do I shall check out what other goodies there are on the menu!

Ah Lois – I’ve been there a few times, I used to work in Chiswick not far from Richmond and a group of us from work used to have dinner there on a Friday after work. I haven’t been down there for some time – glad to know it is still there and lovely to remember it. It’s very pleasant although we used to have a Spaniard in our group and he was always bemoaning the prices they charged compared with the lower cost of tapas in Spain – but hey, that’s how it goes and I do remember the food being delicious. Now I might just have to take a trip down memory lane ….!
