Being a tourist

Recently we went to the USA, for me it was a second visit, for my husband it was the first time. Our tour guide (daughter) planned out itinerary and since she lives not far from New York, she thought we should visit.

I thought this was a great idea, although neither of us are city people, it was too good an opportunity to miss! We got off to a bit of an unfortunate start, the train went early, and then when we were on the underground… um, subway… we had problems getting through the turnstiles which wouldn’t read our tickets, then my husband got stuck in one of those full-sized turnstiles… he wasn’t very happy, I can tell you!!

We arrived at the right station, went up the stairs, and oh my goodness!!! we were in New York!!! And suddenly I was really excited in a way I hadn’t anticipated. I have seen so many pictures, films, shows set here, seen the yellow cabs on TV, and the skyscrapers, and all the throngs of people, and suddenly, here I was in the middle of it!

We went to see the 9/11 monument, which was very moving, but I was shocked to see so many people taking selfies, grinning at the camera as if they were in Disneyland. We had a good wander around, before husband going to the Museum of Modern Art and us going to Central park… then in the evening on to a rather splendid Australian bar!

It was tremendously busy, and very, very hot, but I would like to return when it’s cooler, and visit some other sites, and hope he train doesn’t depart early next time!

I have absolutely no desire to go to another big city anymore least of all New York. Our five months of snow keeps our town as small as it is and that’s quite fine with me. I would rather shovel snow than put up with the noise and crime of New York thanks.
