We’re off to Nunney, a delightful village in Somerset, not far from the town of Frome and actually on the River Frome. We are going to Nunney Fayre which I am sure we will really enjoy, but we are going principally because my husband’s band, 7 to 4, is playing. We are just hoping the weather will be good, as long as it’s dry al will be well, because they are going to be playing at the front of the castle, between the walls and the moat.
The Castle was built near the village by Sir John Delamare who had fought in the Hundred Years War against France; he came out of the war having made his fortune and as a result build a castle. He had a manor house in Nunney, but in 1373 he built a castle. In the centre was a large keep, which measured 60 feet by 24 feet on the inside and was 54 feet tall.
It is really impressive, even though it is a ruin, with its four corner towers. Originally it had three floors, which you can see evidence of inside its roofless structure.
I have no idea what will be happening at the Fayre which is celebrating its 40th anniversary, but I’ll be taking my camera!
